About Us

The Chesterfield Concert Band was formed in the fall of 1997. Since that time, we have been committed to performing the finest in Concert Band music to residents of Chesterfield, and the Central Virginia area. This all-volunteer band has grown in membership to over 60 members, with a diverse combination of adults from all walks of life. Our members range from music educators, to professional and semi-professional musicians, and others who have chosen to continue playing in their adult life. Many are retired, and members range in age from 21-87! We share a passion for music, and a camaraderie of friendship. Many of us have been in the Chesterfield Concert Band for twenty-five years, or more.

Director: Scott Kelley

Scott Kelley is a career Music Director and trumpet player. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College, and a Master’s of Music Degree in Music Performance from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He studied conducting with a series of renowned conductors in the New York area.

Scott played trumpet in New York in the Binghamton Symphony, Elmira Symphony, Corning Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes. He began his teaching career in Troy, PA as Director of the Junior and Senior High School instrumental music programs, and was also the Band Director of Roy C. Ketcham Concert and Marching Bands in Wappingers Falls, NY. Following that, he conducted the Concert and Symphonic Bands, Marching Band, and Award-Winning Jazz Ensemble at Elmira Free Academy. After retiring from Elmira, he taught at the Alternative School for Math & Science in Corning, NY. Scott was the Founder and 28-year Director of the Elmira College Concert Ensemble, the Instrumental Music Director at First Presbyterian Church in Elmira, NY, and Conductor of the Corning Area Community Concert Band. He was also a Conductor at Bristol Hills Music Camp for several years prior to becoming the Camp Director. He and his wife, Jill, who was Registrar of the camp, have since retired from the camp. Scott is continuing his passion for working with school bands and is available to guest conduct festivals and clinics.

Scott and Jill relocated to Midlothian from Elmira, NY to be closer to their children and grandchildren, who live in the Richmond area. That move fortunately lead them to join the Chesterfield Concert Band. Soon after, he agreed to assume the position as Director of Music for our Concert Band. We are honored and grateful to have Scott as Music Director of the Concert Band.
